1in8B official British English website
1in8B Play - Interactive life simulator
On the one in 8 billion website, leave Auto off to make your own decisions. Pause to read the circumstances, then choose a focus from the options available to your character.
The Book of Lives
- Be born somewhere in the world.
- Choose what matters as the years pass.
- Keep the moments that make this life yours.
If you were born right now
Based on annual births, a birth in the first country (India) is about 175 times as likely as a birth in the second (Taiwan).
Includes child death, poverty, illness, war and loss. This fictional simulation combines statistical background with game rules; it does not reproduce real-world event rates individually. Recommended for ages 15 and above.

This is the 1in8B official British English website (1in8b.live) for the Play edition.

The one in 8 billion game on 1in8B Play follows a character through events you can read and decisions you can make. Choose how to respond, keep an eye on changing circumstances and pause when you want time to think. Auto can take over the answers when you prefer to watch.
What does “1 in 8 billion” mean?
The name 1in8b Play reads as “one in 8 billion”, written in full as “one in eight billion”, suggesting one imagined life among billions. You follow it through events and decisions. The name expresses the idea of the game, not an exact probability of being born as a particular person or arriving at a certain ending.
Set the pace, then stop when you need to
The speed controls offer 1×, 2×, 4× and 8×. Next event advances quickly to an event, then restores ordinary playback; Pause stops it for reading. Manual decisions wait for your answer. Auto randomly chooses an available answer and can resolve a waiting decision as soon as it is enabled. It does not cancel a pause you chose yourself.
Save before leaving an unfinished life
Mark favourite events with a star. In the character profile, Save & return to the start takes you back to the opening screen. Continue this life loads the saved story paused. If you choose a new life instead, confirm that it will replace the unfinished one. Completed-life counts and achievements remain in the Book of Lives; progress in an unfinished life is saved only in this browser for this domain.
Read the situation before making a decision
Each new life begins at age 0 in one of 172 countries, drawn using annual births by default or population weights chosen before starting. You cannot specify a country. Read the birth certificate and follow the timeline. Manual decisions wait for an answer; you can put the decision card aside to reread the life so far without advancing time.
Follow four states and their trade-offs
Health, Joy, Mind and Bonds describe the character’s state in the game. Available focuses change with their stage of life. Study can improve Mind while reducing Joy, and work can affect income and Health. Read the effect hints before choosing. High values do not guarantee a particular ending. National averages and fictional game rules cannot predict your personal health, income or lifespan.
Leave a life safely and return to it
Keep favourite events with a star. Save & return to the start, in the profile, takes you to the opening screen; continuing the saved life loads it paused. A finished life has a summary and a record in Past lives. Only retained records can be reread, and older entries may have incomplete detail. A new life requires confirmation before replacing the active one.
Country data explorer
Start with United Kingdom: a closer look, compare living conditions and opportunities in Ireland and Australia, or browse all country baselines. Population, births, health and education are explained alongside the data's limitations.
Data sources and limits
The data notes cite UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank World Development Indicators (WDI). Complete reference years and original values are not recorded for every indicator, so figures are not guaranteed to be current or to match the databases’ present values. The links below explain the indicators and original statistics; they do not verify every game value.
Source databases
The existing baseline draws on UN World Population Prospects 2024 and World Bank development indicators, among other public statistics. It combines different reference years; individual observation years and estimation flags were not retained. Consult the original series before using these figures for research or current decisions.
Before you begin
Will Auto make the strongest decisions?
No. Auto randomly selects an available response. Enabling it can answer a pending decision immediately. It does not remove a pause you chose yourself; switch Auto off to answer manually.
What happens after I press Next event?
The game advances quickly until an event, then returns to playback at the selected speed. Press Pause to stop and read. Manual decisions wait until you answer them.
Will my save follow me to another browser or device?
Progress in an unfinished life is stored for 1in8b.live in this browser and does not sync to other browsers or devices. Clearing site data may remove it; unavailable local storage can limit it to the current tab. You can separately choose to keep the record of a completed life in the cloud. This does not let you continue an unfinished life on another device.
Can I return to a life after starting a new one?
Starting again replaces the active life after confirmation. Completed lives and achievements stay, and recent completed records are available in Past lives. A summary retained for a replaced unfinished life is a record, not a resumable save.
Where can I play the 1 in 8 billion game without a download?
Start a life on this official 1in8B Play page. The 1 in 8 billion website runs free in your browser; there is no app to download and no account to register.
